““As part of my job in communications with the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of genocide and other mass atrocities, I took Spanish lessons with Laura multiple times per week from January of 2016 to December of 2017. While I began this endeavor with a rudimentary understanding of Spanish, my abilities – especially with regards to my professional duties – rapidly improved.
We worked together on a variety of communications products and translations (both English-Spanish and Spanish-English). Due to the nature of my work, translated items featured specialized political and diplomatic vocabularies. Over the course of our time together, we synthesized and translated a wide variety of documents including interviews with prominent actors in the field, recurring reports on efforts for the prevention of mass atrocities, reporting on events in the field, newsletters and other electronic communications, as well as a wide variety of other documents as they arose.

“Laura is an excellent Spanish teacher! She is always well prepared for our classes and she brings interesting materials for us to go through and learn from. I am at an intermediate level of Spanish and vocabulary is what I have the biggest need in improving, and therefore our classes are mainly about increasing vocabulary.
We read different types of text, from news articles to poems, and I feel that is exactly what I need to improve, because I learn such a wide variety of words. Now, after having had four lessons with Laura, I already notice that I have an easier time understanding both spoken and written Spanish, because of the practice I get with Laura, both from our conversations and by learning the unfamiliar words we encounter during each lesson (which are quite a few, the lessons are intense, but definitely worth it!!). What I really like about Laura is how you notice that she is very passionate about Spanish and that she genuinely wants to help you. She is a very motivating teacher because her own interest in learning more and looking up anything she encounters which is not familiar to her, makes me want to learn more as well. (This happens for example when we’re reading from a webpage (in Spanish) about a subject, and then they make a reference to something else, and then we read about that too. She does not derail from Spanish teaching, of course :-) ).
Overall it is really fun and helpful to take classes with Laura, she’s a very nice, fun and smart woman and I’m always looking forward to our classes. She’s definitely the best Spanish teacher I’ve had because she helps me in the specific areas I need help with, and I feel that our time spent together is well worth it and that I leave each lesson having learned a lot.
